After-School Impact Area

• Provides youth a fun, supervised place to go during out-of-school hours.

Need:  31,000 children ages 5-14 live in our in four-county area. In SD, 74% of children ages 6-12 have both parents working outside the home.

Results: Over 1,300 school-aged children participated in after-school programs. Children who attend high-quality programs have better peer relations, emotional adjustment, conflict resolution skills, grades, and conduct in school compared to their peers who were not in after school programs.

Need:  Studies indicate that weekdays from 3:30 to 6:00pm is the highest level of incidence for juvenile criminal, drug, and alcohol-related activity.

Results:  Participants of local after-school programs indicate the programs help them stay away from drugs, get along better with others, take responsibility for their actions, and improve their academics.
