Need: SD leads the nation with 74% of both parents in the workforce who have children younger than six years of age. 

Results:  148 families participated in the program last year.  Parents learn and share parenting tips, suggestions or resources and interact with their child while learning developmental expectations and activities to support child development.

Need: Each year in the Sioux Empire, over 4,000 cases of potential child abuse and neglect are reported and more than 400 of those cases are substantiated.  Studies show that nurse home visitation programs can reduce cases of child abuse and neglect by 79%; simply by visiting the mother weekly beginning in the first trimester of pregnancy

Results: 209 families participated in a nurse home visitation program.  The program engages expectant and new mothers in preventative health practices and prenatal care.  100% of participants eliminated substance use, 90% received prenatal care, and 16% identified maternal depression.  Participants also improve their self-sufficiency by developing a vision for their own future and continuing their education and find work.  67% of participants had a reduction in family violence, 58% were employed, and 30% enrolled in further education.
