Sioux Council Boy Scouts’ Scouting program benefits young people by emphasizing family, community and character education. Last year 6,188 registered Scouts (ages one through 20) participated in 742,560 hours of programming and contributed 21,303 hours in community service. Research shows that men who were Scouts for 5 years are more likely than those who have never been Scouts to graduate high school (91%), earn college degrees (35%), have higher average household incomes ($80,000), and own their own homes (74%).
Sioux Council Boy Scouts’ Juvenile Diversion programs are alternatives to formal court proceedings. Last year 471 teens participated in Teen Court and 140 teens participated in RISE. Combined the teens completed 20,094 hours of community service and had recidivism rates less than 5%.
Sioux Council Boy Scouts’ Scoutreach includes at-risk Scouting and Soccer & Scouting. The services ensures culturally diverse and low-income youth have opportunity to experience Scouting. 481 youth participated in Scouting opportunities last year.
Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons’ Girl Scout Leadership Experience offers girls hands-on learning opportunities to develop positive traits that will help them make sound, more life-affirming choices. Last year 2,333 girls participated in learning opportunities. 963 girls attended council-led programs, 217 attended summer camps, and 450 attended a program focusing on self-esteem and creative expression.
Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons’ Girl Scout Outreach provided 501 at-risk girls with the opportunity to participate in Scouting programs last year.
Sioux Empire Character Counts Coalition provides an educational framework for teaching universal: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Last year 70 presentations were made to 16,000 people and 100,000 students had contact with Character Counts materials.
Sioux Falls Family’s YMCA Youth Basketball provide instruction and organized basketball for 2,753 K-12 students last year.
YWCA Sioux Falls’ Girls on the Run is a character development and empowerment program for girls ages 8-11 that uses non- competitive running and training to achieve the goal of participation in a 5K run/walk. Last year, 478 girls participated at 31 Sioux Empire schools.
YWCA Sioux Falls’ Youth Recreation programming provides a variety of youth activities for a variety of ages of children. Last year, 381 youth participated in sports league and 220 participated in youth camps.
Connecting Kids provided 605 children in grades K-8 with the opportunity to take part in an activity for a free or reduced rate last year. A survey of parents found that 66% of respondents would not have been able to participate in activities without Connecting Kids.
